Feel Calm Again: Acupuncture for Stress, Anxiety & Burnout
Stress and Anxiety are not always what people associate with community acupuncture, but they are some of the most common and powerfully addressed symptoms we see here in our Somerville clinic.
Stress as an underlying factor of most health concerns. Regardless of a patient’s primary symptoms, acupuncture can help with underlying stress, anxiety, depression and anger. For many patients, mental and emotional health is the main focus of their treatment. Acupuncture helps folks feel more resourced and more ‘themselves; whether in an acute stretch of overwhelm and burnout, or dealing with chronic mental and emotional challenges.
Many people deal with chronic stress and/or insomnia as a result of traumatic experiences. Community acupuncture is designed to be safer for people with current and/or past traumas. Open Space Community Acupuncture has trauma informed practitioners. Look for “Trauma Informed” at the top of their profile description.
How acupuncture may reduce stress and anxiety.
#1. Reduces Pain
Acupuncture can stimulate the release of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers. This can help reduce stress and anxiety levels and promote relaxation and calmness.
#2. Boosts Mood
Acupuncture can increase the production of serotonin and other neurotransmitters in the brain, which can improve the mood and reduce depression.
#4. Increase Physical Relaxation
Acupuncture can stimulate the body’s natural healing processes and reduce inflammation, which can help relieve chronic pain and discomfort, allowing the body to relax.
Acupuncture benefits the mental and emotional health even if the person’s primary focus is something other than mental health. Regardless of what brings folks in for acupuncture, mental health tends to benefit.
What to expect from treatment
Most treatment plans for stress, anxiety and other mental emotional conditions start with two or three treatments for the first couple of weeks. Many people are advised to try at least six to eight sessions before deciding whether it helps enough to continue. Sessions typically last 40-60 minutes.
The needles are sterile, disposable, and in within minutes. Many notice the relaxation effect of acupuncture immediately. It’s not uncommon for folks to spend the session napping. For lasting results, we encourage new patients to come in frequently at first, often 2-3 times a week for the first couple of weeks. At that point we check in and many people can spread their treatments out.
