Our Story

Daphne Jochnick opened Open Space Community Acupuncture on May Day, 2011 in Union Square, Somerville to bring affordable acupuncture to the heart of the city. Daphne had been in private practice for over a decade. Like many community acupuncturists, she discovered the community model via the  Community Acupuncture Network, now the People’s Organization of Community Acupuncture (POCA)

OSCA is a clinic member of  POCA and many of our staff and patients are members too. We are working together towards a common goal of affordable acupuncture. You can join too!

Go to <pocacoop.com> to learn more and join POCA at the ‘community level’.  In our appreciation for your support, POCA Community members get unlimited reduced cost treatments at OSCA every May and October, as well as other perks.

We are a social business funded solely by patient fees and occasional grants.  Most people hear about us from someone they know, so please help us spread the word!

Community Acupuncture

Community Acupuncture is the heart of what we do. Treatments are $35-$60 sliding-scale with a $30 hardship rate/no income verification, no questions asked.

The Community model of  Acupuncture is win/win:  Low rates allow you to come in often enough to get better and stay better; Healing together with others creates an atmosphere where each treatment is all the more effective.

Join The People's Organization of community acupuncture

(POCA) is a member-run non-profit organization whose mission is to work cooperatively to increase accessibility to and availability of affordable group acupuncture treatments. We envision a world in which every community has access to local, affordable acupuncture to reduce collective and individual suffering and to nurture resilience.

We acknowledge the debt we owe, as community acupuncturists, to the Young Lords and the Black Panthers, two groups challenging racism and oppression in the 1970’s who fought to bring affordable group acupuncture into their communities to address the scourge of addiction.

Black Panther party leader Huey Newton returned late to San Francisco from a visit to China where he said he petitioned Chairman Mao Tse-tung to be chief negotiator to President Nixon, "For the peace and freedom of the oppressed people of the world." Newton (L), said that he did not actually meet with Mao Tse-tung, but presented his petition to Chinese Premier Chou En-lai. (Photo by Bettmann Archive/Getty Images)
